HGV Essentials Course Aims

This HGV Essentials course will provide you with the opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of the various driver hour regulations, including rest and associated record keeping requirements.

Course Content

This course covers the following subjects

• Driver hours – Domestic and EC 561/2006
• EC Regulation – Driving Limits
• Taking Rests and Breaks
• Split Rest, Ferry Rest and Multi Manning
• Road Transport Working Time Regulations
• Work Limits and Breaks
• Record Keeping, Penalties and Infringements Under EC/165/14
• The course content is derived from RHA Modules 1&2 – HGV Essentials

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course you will be able to;

• Understand which set of driver hour regulations apply to your work.
• Define the terms “Driving Time”, “Driving Period”, “Rest”, ”Break”, “Period of Availability”, “Other Work” and the corresponding limits.
• Identify when breaks and rest are required and state the required duration and requirements of any reductions.
• Complete tachograph records, identify correct modes to be used on digital and where required analogue equipment.
• Carry out necessary procedures in the event of emergencies and equipment failure.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the driver hour records to be carried by the driver.
