The process of obtaining HGV licensing (Heavy Goods Vehicle) can seem daunting, but with the right understanding of the individual steps involved, it becomes much more manageable.
Whether you’re pursuing a 7.5T, Class 1 or Class 2 license, knowing the process is crucial for your success. This blog will break down the process into clear steps so you can approach it with confidence in 2025.
Step 1: Meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements
Before you can start your training, you must meet the basic eligibility criteria:
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old to obtain a Class C1 (7.5t), Class 2 (rigid vehicle) license and Class 1 (articulated vehicle) HGV licensing.
- Medical Exam: You must pass a medical examination to confirm you are fit to drive. This typically involves a check-up by your GP or private doctor and will require a vision test.
- Provisional License: Before taking your driving test, you need to apply for a provisional HGV license. This allows you to begin your training. You can apply for a provisional HGV license through the DVLA. You will need a D2 and D4 form.
Step 2: The Theory Test
The next step is the theory test, which last two hours and consists of two parts:
- Multiple-choice questions: This section tests your knowledge of road signs, regulations, and best practices for HGV driving. You should allocate 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete.
- Hazard perception test: You will watch a series of video clips and must identify potential hazards in real-time. Here, we advise students to dedicate 45 minutes of their allocated 2 hour test time.
It’s important to study and prepare thoroughly for the theory test. Many training providers offer study materials, practice exams and courses to help you pass. At Surecall, we provide all the support you need to help guide you and get you on the road and driving as fast as we possibly can.
Step 3: The Practical Driving Test
Once you’ve passed your theory test, you can begin practical driving lessons. When you’re ready, you’ll take your practical test, which will include:
- Reversing exercises: You’ll be asked to reverse the vehicle into a specific area or perform other specific manoeuvres.
- A road drive: The examiner will assess your ability to drive safely and competently in various traffic situations.
- Vehicle safety questions and checks: The examiner will ask you to demonstrate basic safety checks on the vehicle before and during your training.
Ensure you get plenty of practice with a qualified instructor before your test to ensure you are in the best possible position to take your test. At Surecall, we work very closely with each of our students to ensure they are supported and guided in the best way possible.
Step 4: CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence)
For those wishing to drive professionally, you’ll need to complete the CPC
(Certificate of Professional Competence). There is one way of obtaining your CPC for the first time and one way of updating your CPC card.
- Initial CPC: This consists of one theory test (2a) and one practical test (4b) 2a must be completed before 4b
- Periodic CPC: After obtaining your CPC, you’ll need to complete 35 hours of training every five years to keep your qualifications up to date.
Step 5: Getting Your License
Once you’ve passed your theory test, practical test and completed your CPC, you can apply for your full HGV license. Your new license will allow you to drive HGV vehicles professionally.
Understanding the licensing process is the first step toward becoming an HGV driver in 2025. By following the steps outlined above, you can approach each stage of the process with clarity and confidence. With proper preparation, you’ll soon be on the road to a successful career!
